Margaret Whiting singing “Moonlight in Vermont” … at first the arrangement seems so straight, so square. But then there’s the piano, softly, in the background, and it sounds just like petals of moonlight falling on a clear mountain stream. The strings come in. And the words are all stream-of-consciousness, one image after another. No rhymes, just rhythm. So vivid and crystal clear, pure delight. You feel the people in the song without them even being mentioned.
