The Dave Brubeck Quartet with The Fourth Presbyterian Church Morning Choir and Tower Brass / Russell Gloyd, Conductor
Thursday, Mar 17, 2005 7:30 PM CST (6:30 PM doors)
at Fourth Presbyterian Church, Michigan Avenue, Chicago
Tonight! Dave is 84 years old now, and this will probably be the last chance I’ll get to see him. It’ll be thrilling! For awhile now he’s been a hero of mine. Here’s a guy who, in the 50s, as a geeky white boy took the music world by storm and created the top-selling jazz album up to that time (“Take Five,” which held the title briefly before “Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis overtook it; it’s still #2 I believe). He formed an integrated quartet without making a big to-do about it, and has been playing continuously for nearly 60 years. I don’t really know how the Quartet is getting mixed in with the church orchestra but it’s bound to be interesting.
A bit weird that the show is on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a “holiday” that has always meant little or nothing to me.
