A maddening day after a night of partial insomnia; I kept replaying the footage of New Orleans in my head all night. In a way I think it’s more terrible even than 9/11. That came without warning. This came with plenty of warning, maybe a century or two of warning. And, for various reasons which have already been discussed and dissected, we still didn’t respond correctly. And STILL AREN’T responding correctly.

I hope Bush’s approval ratings and “political capital” sink to rock-bottom lows, rendering him as lame as he already is metaphorically, and that he remains that way through the election of 2008, and I hope he drags the rest of his party down with him. We will soon have the chance to rebuild New Orleans. Maybe we’ll have that chance in DC as well.
