Trip Bits #1

La Salita, the Mexican restaurant in Albuquerque we went to when I was a kid. I went back. They open at 11:00 for lunch. I arrived at 11:15. By 11:30 every table was full and people were on the waiting list. It’s hard to say just exactly why the food is so good. It just has that home-cooked authenticity that makes every bite feel good. When you sit down they bring you a basket of tortilla chips with WARM green chile salsa. I mean, actually heated up.  Unusual. I had the beef enchiladas with red chile. Lots of molten cheese. The meal comes with two freshly-made sopaipillas, which is a kind of puffy fried dough that you eat with honey. I can’t tell you how many of these I had as a kid. Delicious. I told my waitress that I hadn’t eaten there in 20 years and she smiled. I left her an absurdly big tip. Still trying to get my tip karma back.
