Trip Bits #5

My old elementary school In Albuquerque, S.Y. Jackson: seems every bit as large as I remembered it. And the range of mountains that feels very close. The walk to the old house seemed very long when I was a kid. Actually, it’s only a few blocks. The houses all look the same as they did. Perpetually 1982. The only difference is that the split-rail fence that ran in front of our house is gone. There were some gardeners there pruning branches off the tree in the front yard. Yucca plants, cacti, rock gardens in the front yards of many of the houses instead of grass. We, however, had a lawn. A boy named Graham lived across the street. Another random house I remember from trick-or-treating there one year.  There were no actual residents to be seen anywhere in the neighborhood. Only gardeners, construction works. A guy was clearing branches from the front yard of a house, putting them into the bed of a pickup truck which was playing 70’s country.
