What the hell is going on? When did the world get so crazy? When did things stop fitting together? What do they hope to accomplish? What do I hope to accomplish? Where are we going to end up? Will it ever be possible to undue any of this damage? When did bombing ever solve anything, in the long run? Does it make sense to punish a whole country for the crimes of a few? Who gets the last laugh? Why is it that whenever I watch an old black & white movie I find myself imagining that moment in history and wondering if things if were really like that? Why doesn’t anything make sense? What is sense? What would it be like? What is that deep spark in the heart of humanity that keeps a creative urge burning even when everything around us is going up in flames? Is is the same reason that musicals are so popular during wartime? What does domestic policy have in common with foreign policy? If everyone were having good sex more often, would this kind of thing happen less often? How can anyone think that a 95-degree day is enjoyable? Why do people like the summertime? Why is there an entire cult of pleasure built around it? And why do some people say, “Chicago’s a great town, but I just can’t handle the winters”? How long does it take before you know you want to spend the rest of your life with someone? What does it it feel to have an epiphany? How do you get a person out of their shell? How do you change a person’s mind? Is it worth trying? What’s the value in randomly emailing an old flame of yours to see how he’s doing? Are memories born in the heart or in the head? Is our current situation a good reason to have children, or a good reason NOT to have children? Is it acceptable to have a personal moment of peace and harmony in the midst of so much cruelty and chaos? Is that justified? Should I feel guilty? What do these questions mean? Where do they come from? How long has this been going on? Will it ever stop? Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
