I Live in Fear [1955]
1. The waiting room is very hot and everyone’s sweating. He brings them all cold bottles of soda with straws in them, passes them out. There is one bottle leftover for himself. He sits down, takes out the straw and drinks deeply. Everyone else stares down uncomfortably at their own bottles but no one else drinks.
2. He kneels down in the mud, soiling his robe. Then he apologizes and insists to all the workers that he will find a way to take them to Brazil too. It is at this point that we first know, undoubtedly, that he’s gone mad.
3. The final shot. The banister of a staircase divides the frame in half. On the left, the dentist warily descends the stairs. On the right, a young woman walks down a hallway. When the frame is empty the shot is held for a moment before fading to black.
