3 things about Nicholas Ray’s REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE

Rebel Without a Cause [1955]

1. Red. Though the other girls in the waiting room have on drab coats and jackets, hers is bright red. His windbreaker is bright red. Plato wears one blue sock and one red sock, caught between conformity and rebelliousness.
2. “Do you live here?” he asks. She tosses her head back and says, “Who lives.” Winona Ryder’s early career was based on this moment.
3. The song dedicated to Jim that plays on the radio is “Five O’Clock Whistle.”

Jim Backus always reminded me of my grandfather, so every time I see this movie I think about him. They looked alike.
