3 things about William Wyler’s THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES

The Best Years of Our Lives [1946]

1. She points to the smoky smudges in the aerial photograph and asks, “What are those?” He smiles and replies, “Little black flowers that grow in the sky.”
3. Using the tines of a fork against the tablecloth, Myrna Loy tallies how many drinks he’s had.
3. She looks at them as if she’s never seen a bowl of peas before in her life.

Seeing the movie now, finally, I can really appreciate Paul Auster’s careful reading of it in his novel Sunset Park. I’d love to go back and look at it again right now, only I can’t find my copy (I do own a copy of it, don’t I?)
