3 things about Jim Sharman’s THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

The Rocky Horror Picture Show [1975]

1. The bones become visible through the bandages.
2. Dr. Frank-N-Furter runs his index finger down the treasure trail.
3. An uncanny replica of the RKO logo.

Believe it or not, I’d never seen it before. It was kinda what I was expecting. “Outrageous” in a way that now seems dismaying tame, with a plot that goes nowhere and yet takes forever to get there. On the other hand, Tim Curry is sensational, and it’s filmed a lot more crisply than I was expecting. I didn’t realize that it was shot by Peter Suschitzky, who’s David Cronenberg’s go-to guy. The music sounds fantastic, even if the songs themselves are a bit hit or miss. I definitely was not expecting Charles Gray (Blofeld in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER) to be in the cast.

All in all, pretty fun. I think John Cameron Mitchell definitely did it one better with HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH.
