3 things about Robert Altman’s COUNTDOWN

Countdown [1967]

1. “If Lee says we’re going to the moon, then we’re going to the moon until Lee says we’re not going to the moon.”
2. When she sings, Barbara Baxley sounds like Blossom Dearie.
3. He stuffs the rubber rat into the package with the American flag.

Very interesting; seen from today’s vantage point it almost plays like an alternate history, a la The Man in the High Castle. You can already see Altman trying to get away with some overlapping dialogue, and multiple “little” scenes unfolding simultaneously in a larger setting. It’s actually a really fine screenplay too. Pretty happy that I watched The Right Stuff so recently. The two movies are fascinating to compare.
