The eve of the end of the Old West: a new breed of outlaw has infiltrated the frontier. In the town of Sharpton, Harry Belafonte uses the town’s bank as his own private slush fund, making withdrawals whenever he pleases and using the funds to finance pyramid schemes and his own luxurious lifestyle. Kirk Douglas is the local sheriff. He knows something’s fishy but is too timid to investigate; Belafonte has certain embarrassing information that Douglas would rather keep hidden. Into town rides Robert Mitchum, a combination gunslinger/bank examiner who’s determined to get to the bottom of things, whatever the cost. In the process he might just help Douglas find the courage he needs to confront his past mistakes and become an honest man.
Not an actual movie, unfortunately, but a dream I had a few nights ago.
