3 things about Sergio Leone’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA

Once Upon a Time in America [1983]

1. “What have you been doing?”
“Going to bed early.”
2. Slowly removing her facepaint.
3, Taillights become headlights.

The extended director’s cut does fill in some gaps, and it’s nice to see Louise Fletcher and more Treat Williams. But there are still some nonsensical elements to the story that don’t add up. And I wish the freshness of the first third didn’t drain away. The Blu-ray, however, looks and sounds amazing.
