Backrooms [2026]
- Mounds of discarded clothes; a “Stop Apartheid” t-shirt.
- The excavator rips into the house.
- Absurd belly shirt.
Any film which, consciously or not, evokes Robert A. Heinlein’s classic short story “—And He Built a Crooked House—” (1941), Richard Matheson’s “Little Girl Lost” episode of The Twilight Zone (1962), and David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE (2006) has got my attention.
Its only “flaw” is that it’s not much of a horror film. (Something I couldn’t care less about, so it’s all to the good.) Pretty much everything else is impeccable! Quite an allegory of AI’s awfulness. The production design is genuinely astonishing. Last Year at Marienbad by way of K-Mart.
