Dr. No [1962]
1. Holding the spider cage at arm’s length, he leaves the room.
2. “I wouldn’t want you to get dishpan hands.”
3. So, basically 007 gets of a jam by deliberately causing a nuclear meltdown. And it’s a happy ending. Oh, 1962 …

Cyclone [1978]
1. 20 minutes before landing, the flight attendant serves everyone coffee, including the children.
2. They pass the newborn child around the boat.
3. Arthur Kennedy seems to have been dubbed by two or three different people. Sometimes he has a slight Irish accent, other times he sounds like Isaac Hayes.
This delightful piece of trash has everything: a plane crash, bloodthirsty sharks, cannibalism, dubious dubbing, synth-disco theme music, and some unexpectedly lovely cinematography.
Progress always arises out of conflict.
Django Unchained [2012]
1. “Kill white people and get paid for it? What’s not to like?”
2. Russ Tamblyn as a doctor.
3. He lets his cane fall to the floor and then straightens his back.
If Tarantino ever makes a film that doesn’t feature at least one Mexican Standoff, I’ll be shocked.
Anatomy of a Murder [1959]
1. Matching cigarette lighters.
2. Blocking his sightline.
3. He advises her to keep the girdle.
This film gets better and better. 3 other things.
Wild. On November 7, 2015 Pause of the Clock premiered at the 38th Denver Film Festival!

Even one year later, it’s still hard to believe we actually pulled it off. It’s true, the movie isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. (That long take in the beginning is there as a kind of litmus test). But I think when people get the movie, they really get it. For me, as a filmmaker, that makes it worth it.
Meanwhile, my new project is inching forward …
I had the great privilege to review Mark Frost’s new novel for Booklist. Check out my spolier-free review!
Resilience [2016]
1. Only 5% of health care spending goes towards preventative medicine.
2. Dear Miss Kendra letters.
3. While her mother sobs, the baby looks into the camera, curious.
Eye-opening.
It Follows [2014]
1. A game of Old Maid on the porch. No one’s really paying attention.
2. Target practice using cereal boxes.
3. After finally having sex, they confirm with each other that nothing has changed.
Possession [1981]
1. If Mark is barely around, where did the kid get his chipper English accent?
2. “Because you think you’ve given her supreme pleasure? You, with your Yin-Yang balls dangling from your Zen brain?”
3. An empty subway tunnel. Eggs, milk, blood.
Oh, boy. This one’s a real lulu. Happy Halloween!
