And finally my
Winter coat comes out of the
Closet, crestfallen
Our parents haven’t
Driven the stake through the heart
Of the obsolete
Assaulted by a
vile stench of pumpkin I flee
The empty cafe
The Story of Esther Costello [1957]
1. “You can’t turn a hard woman into a soft woman. It’s like hardboiling an egg backwards.”
2. “Book. Book. Book. Book. Book.”
3. Perverse: rape heals her psychological trauma.

TURTLES
can only be seen at 4
o’clock in the morning
in the city of Los
Angeles, the hour (as
Camus observed) when all
the people are fast asleep.
Nature whispers: yes, really,
I’m still here. And
the turtles come out of their shells
into the lovely empty streets.
The pavement carries them
along like a stream. And
they fly on tongues
of mist along the power lines
and wagging stop lights,
turned to red like a sucker.
Once the size of quarters,
now as big as pancakes.
Slowly they creep. Past the sleeping
boxes of cars, through
the parking lots & into Ralph’s. How beautiful
she is without people
in her!
The wonderfully vacant
cash machines spit out 20’s
onto the white linoleum.
But the grocery clerk doesn’t blink.
This happens almost
every night. After all,
like everyone else
they need their
bottled water.

Five Easy Pieces [1970]
1. “Not dirt. See, dirt isn’t bad. It’s filth! Filth is bad. That’s what starts maggots and riots.”
2. A crooked candlestick on the mantel.
3. He doesn’t close her door on the way out; he tries to leave without saying goodbye; he forgets his jacket in the washroom.

Awake or asleep
