In Bruges [2008]
1. He uses a 50-euro note to pay to go to the top of the belltower.
2. While waiting for the phone call he watches the very beginning of Touch of Evil on TV.
3. "I’m going to die now."

Back in Colorado. Suburban Denver. Arvada. For lunch today I took my grandmother to Old Country Buffet. That’s where she wanted to go. At Old Country Buffet, it is not All-You-Can-Eat. It is All-You-Care-To-Eat. Nevertheless people everywhere were walking back to their tables with their plates piled high. If you can eat as much as you care to eat, why overload your plate? You can always go back for more. Why mingle your cantelope unpleasantly with your biscuits & gravy because you’ve piled your plate so fucking high?
This is part of what America has become, and is, at this moment in the history of the universe.
Forgive my crummy photos. But hot dog, I’m excited! Tiki just round the bend!
L’Avventura [1960]
1. “She’s like what Oscar Wilde wrote. Give her the luxuries and she can do without the little necessities.”
2. Lying on the bed, on her back, leg in the air, she puts on her stockings while singing along to a pop song.
3. Early morning. Legs in stockings. She puts her feet on the piles of banknotes and pulls them towards her body.
Quantum of Solace [2008]
1. Dead girl on the bed coated in oil. Brilliant variation on Goldfinger.
2. The axe chops through the top of his shoe, lengthwise.
3. The little “Q” pins the bad guys wear on their lapels. Would they really choose to advertise that to the general public? “Why yes, I am evil, just take a look at this pin on my lapel.”
Short Cuts [1993]
1. There are four occasions in the movie where someone says either "What’s that supposed to mean?" or "What does that mean?"
2. Andie MacDowell carries a tin of Altoids in her purse.
3. Jack Lemmon’s final scene. He realizes that his grandson Casey is going to die and that he will be alone again, and he puts on his cap and walks away from the camera. Down the hall. A hospital worker is mopping the floor very slowly; Lemmon walks past him, interrupting his rhythm, but the worker is oblivious to what has just happened.
Man on the Flying Trapeze [1935]
1. He removes the tap from the barrel of applejack to fill his glass. "That’s the Jersey way of getting it out of there!"
2. "What’s your profession?" "Memory expert."
3. He chases after the spare tire. Jogging in place, rear projection. Like that Devo video. Or was it a "Weird Al" video?
Home sick from work. And I know exactly which of my colleagues had it too. I remember on Monday someone telling him, “When are you going to give in and just go home?’ He didn’t. Thus infecting us all.
I figure if I rest up though I’ll be in okay shape to go see 007 tonight. I feel better than I did last night. Been pounding vitamins and liquids and soup since last night. Just need rest today. I had already bought tickets for Andy and I on Monday. Gotta make it happen. Gotta see Bond.
We watched a W.C. Fields movie last night and it made me feel better; or at least, more resigned to being sick, more at peace with it. Then while I was asleep I had all these strange dreams. One involved chatting with Robert Downey Jr. on the street and then getting his autograph, and me telling him, “I’m so glad you’re making movies again. What was it like to make Short Cuts with Altman?” In another dream Andy and I were waiting in a very long line at Walgreen’s that barely seemed to be moving. I was waiting in line to pick up money owed me for songwriting royalties (!)
Here’s my long review of Twilight. I was surprised by how enjoyable it was. It’s a pretty sweet-hearted movie. Though I’m afraid that there will be the temptation to make the sequel all amped-up and noisy.
Twilight [2008]
1. "Your mood swings are kinda giving me whiplash."
2. The name of the restaurant they often go to: Carver Cafe. Nice nod to Raymond.
3. Jackson Rathbone, who plays Jasper, is a dead ringer for Kill Hannah’s Mathew Devine.
