3 Things

Meanwhile [2006]

1. A blind would-be rapist.
2. Lying next to each other on a fancy bed, making small talk. Phone rings. It’s the front desk: your hour is up.
3. One of the main actors (don’t know his name) looked a lot like Wes Bentley.

3 things about Stuart Gordon’s STUCK

Stuck [2007]

1. In my view, the first must-see movie at this year’s festival.
2. Stephen Rea fashioning a make-shift sling out of a length of scrap wood and a bunch of plastic bags tied together; the splintered glass raining down from his hair and bloody raincoat like grains of kosher salt.
3. The second movie I’ve seen this year where someone is killed by being stabbed in the eye. Ouch.

3 Things

Hallam Foe [2007]

1. Jamie Bell is pretty easy on the eyes when fully naked, but the effect is all but negated when the movie he’s in is a whimsical coming-of-age dramedy about incest.
2. Edinburgh still looks like a cool place to live.
3. Probably the best thing about the new movie was a gentle new song by Franz Ferdinand which plays over the end credits.

3 Things #8

Control [2007]

1. Black & white was totally the right choice, because it means that you pay less attention to the 70’s fashions and decor and more to the characters and settings.
2. Craig Parkinson was a great Tony Wilson, but alas I could not get Steve Coogan’s portrayal in 24 Party People out of my head.
3.  The last half hour is very tough to watch, knowing what’s coming. I’m glad that Corbijn did not actually show the suicide.

Tonight it begins. I have 11 screenings lined up over the course of the festival. Tonight it’s Control. O how excited I am!

Last night I went to Intelligentsia to buy some beans and do some rewriting of “Tiny Apocalypse.”

I can’t be sure, but I think one of the baristas flirted with me. And I think, quite possibly, I may have flirted back. After being in a relationship for so long I’m not sure I can recognize when it’s happening very accurately.

3 Things #7

America the Beautiful [2007]

1. Although the U.S. makes up only 5% of the world’s population, its residents are exposed to 40% of its advertising.
2. In an especially wicked jibe, director Darryl Roberts points out that despite the fact that many Revlon cosmetics contain suspected carcinogens (which are are banned in the E.U.) twice a year the company sponsors breast cancer walk-a-thons.
3. Teenage model Garren Taylor crying, “I don’t understand why everyone in this industry is so fake!”

3 things about David Lynch’s TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me [1992]

1. Towards the end of the movie the monkey whispers, “Judy.” Earlier, David Bowie’s character says, “We’re going to leave Judy out of this. In fact we’re not going to talk about Judy at all.”
2. That extreme closeup of Ray Wise: smiling malevolence melting into stunned blankness melting into profound sorrow. Always floors me.
3. Creamed corn as visual symbol for garmonbozia (pain and suffering).

OK. So I took the plunge and bought plane tickets to see the family over Thanksgiving. I found a roundtrip for $300 and then winced slightly as I clicked “confirm.” Andy will be spending that weekend alone most likely, which frankly is what he needs: he’ll be quite busy with classwork.

Whatever else, this also means that I’ll be having some damn good food on November 22nd and will be spoiled. It’s been four years I think since I’ve been in Colorado over Thanksgiving. And it also means that Andy & I are free to spend Christmas alone together here in Chicago. Cripes! That’s months away but I’m already looking forward to it. Our last Christmas alone together in Chicago was magical. We refer to it as the iPod Christmas.
