I’m back in Chicago. Give me some time to catch up.

Trippin’

After work I head to Midway and my six-day journey begins.

So my grandmother’s favorite movie is “The Sound of Music.” And I’ve never seen it (which either causes you, the reader, to be stunned or envious). For some reason I just never saw it growing up. Tonight when I unpack I’m going to present her with the DVD as a present, and tell her that as I’ve never seen it we should watch it together tomorrow night. I picture an intergenerational bonding evening involving a pizza, root beer, and Julie Andrews.

Feelin’ good this morning! I will miss Andy though.

Zing!

“Anybody here from New Zealand? They have a big, new attraction. It’s a live sex show in New Zealand. They have actual bulls mounting a simulated cow. Good to see Ann Coulter getting some work.”

Great weekend. LIke a prelude to my own vacation. Since Andy’s dad is in town (sorry we weren’t free Friday night sumsinnow ) it’s meant a lot of sight-seeing and eating out. Good golly, already we’ve hit Bridget McNeill’s, Stella’s, Leona’s, and Ann Sather. So umm basically a lot of places named after women.

We went to the Jazz Mart. I got “Sunday Morning” by Grant Green and “Conssequence” by Jackie McLean.

Today was Millennium Park. And I thought Andy’s dad was going to pop his eyes out, swooning. He was so impressed. And I felt that warm glow in my ribcage known as “Chicago Pride.” Thinking to myself, “You know what? This is the best damn city in the world!”

It rained a little but it was more moody than annoying. We got home and everyone took naps. I dreamt about a sunken battleship that they were trying to raise by means of a bladder inserted inside the length of the ship. They were going to pump it up with air.

Soon it will be dinnertime, and cocktail hour. We plan to introduce Andy’s dad to El Diablo. Hopefully I can convince them to watch a movie.

Okay. Feeling much better today.

We watched “Eros” last night, and though in many ways it was a bit too languid it was also very refreshing somehow. The Soderbergh segemnt was slight but somehow thoroughly amusing. I’d pay to watch Alan Arkin and Robert Downey, Jr. read a newspaper out loud. The bonus on the DVD was an additional short film by Antonioni called “Michaelangelo Eye to Eye.” It’s a deceptively simple “wordless monologue” that consists of him examining several scupltures of Michaelaneglo, both with his eyes and by running his fingers over them. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s beautiful.

So after work I’m running some errands and then meeting Andy’s dad at Union Station. I’m pretty excited about it. The other day I referred to him as my “surrogate dad.” I have infinitely more interests in common with him that with my real dad (sigh). I mean, tomorrow we’re going to spend several hours together at the Jazz Mart while Andy’s at work. And I’ll show off the new surround system. I have just the right Kenton track lined up . Awesome.

And of course he can exasperate me too,  just like my real parents. I think if we can navigate ourselves through the absurd heatwave this weekened we’ll have a blast. As I’ve said before he was supposed to come visit us in March. Ahhhh there’s nothing like SPS (Steadham Procrastination Syndrome). Andy is also afflicted by it. (He’ll probably slap me for mentioning it, which is itself a symptom of OSS: Overly Sensitive Syndrome).

Perhaps I can convince them to go see “Prairie Home Companion” on Sunday.

Things are still iffy, but better. I have the weekend to look forward to. If having Andy’s dad visit in the midst of 95 degree weather with high humidity is worth looking foward to. I love Andy’s dad. I just wish he’d visited in March like he said he would. Oh, and I’m having hearing problems too. Wonderful! I have a doctor’s appointment scheduled for Monday.

I know, I know, I ought to stop complaining. Sorry. After all, I can still see and walk.

And I have my vacation next week to look forward to: Colorado, New Mexico.

epitonic.com is pretty fun & they’re radio is cool too.

What a horrible day. But Andy was here at home to comfort me, and I’m grateful for that.
