Last night I dreamt I was waiting in a very long line at a British supermarket. There was going to be some kind of dedication celebration later with a kid’s chior or something and so the store was a mess. When it was finally my turn to check out I gave the cashier my “preferred shopper” card and my (US) credit card. She looked at my credit card dubiously and then announced that it was too large to fit in their machines. We haggled back and forth. Finally I offered to write her out a check, which caused her to laugh scornfully.

“Oh yes, you’ll write out a check and then that’s the last we’ll see of YOU,” she said.

“I’m 30 years old, I’m an adult, and I’ve got a check card for Tesco; I’ve written out checks there before and I don’t understand what the big deal is,” I countered.

Everyone in the queue was getting very annoyed and began to urge the cashier to just take my check so that things could just move along.

I awoke this morning thinking about my brief time living in London. The month that I lived on Peckham Road near Elephant & Castle. The flat where I satyed was actually walking distance from a Tesco, and that’s where I shopped. I was dead broke, and as a result the only really economical things I could buy were terribly unhealthy–they were canned, came in hideous red-and-white generic packaging and always had very industrial-sounding names. Like “BEANS IN SAUCE.” “PASTA WITH MEAT PRODUCT.” And they often had three DIFFERENT sweeteners: sugar, saccharine (the English seem to use in everything), NutraSweet. I’ve no doubt that part of why I came down with tonsilitus while I was there was my awful diet.

Yet there were lovely moments. Tea, a rainy sidewalk strewn with autumn leaves, brass railing outside the corner pub.

A Deep Breath

Well … I did it.

After work on Wednesday, June 21st, I’m flying out to Denver. At the airport I’ll pick up my rental car and then drive to my grandmother’s in Lakewood. I’ll spend all day Thursday and Friday with her, and also my folks for some of the time in there somewhere. Saturday morning I’ll get up early, have breakfast with Rosemary (my grandmother) and then head due south in the car. Approximately six hours later (factoring in refueling stops and a bite to eat) I’ll arrive in Ranchos de Taos where my friend Rob lives, basically out in the middle of the freakin’ desert. I’ll spend the rest of Saturday and Sunday with him. Enjoying the sand. Then, Monday morning I’ll get up and we’ll drive to Albuquerque (it’s about an hour and a half away). I’ll try and find some of the places from my childhood and hopefully have lunch at La Salida, where we went to eat a lot of the time. About 3 o’clock I’ll say goodbye to Rob, drop off the rental car at the Albuquerque airport and then catch a plane to Denver, make a transfer, and finally get back to Chicago. Late Monday night, June 26th. Then I’ll have the day off from work on Tuesday in order to recover and relax.

Gee it all sounds kinda insane now that I’ve written it out. But I just couldn’t pass up the chance to do all this stuff, see all these things, do some driving, have a pseudowild adventure. Who knows when I’ll ever be able to again.

Cinco de Mayo

Oops, looks like I was COMPLETELY wrong about why this day is celebrated. Actually, according to wikipedia: “It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the French expeditionary forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.” And: “Although the celebration of this holiday has historically been limited to Latin-American communities, particularly in the southwest, it has become increasingly popular across the country and among all ethnic groups in the last 10 years. In recent years, it has been celebrated widely and in a similar style as St. Patrick’s Day — namely a celebration and identification with Mexicans, their culture, food, and music by Anglos and other unrelated ethnic groups. However, many Americans have only a cursory understanding of the significance of this day; it is often mistakenly assumed to be Mexico’s independence day, and in practice, it is usually celebrated on a superficial level.”

Yup, superficial. Margaritas.

E-gods, work SUCKS today. Thankfully we’re all staying in a good mood, laughing if off. You see, when we all got here this morning we discovered that our IT department had DELETED US ALL … no profile, no log-in, no indication that we even work here or even EXIST. WAY TO GO. Took several hours to get everything workable again. Oh, and I have to create a spreadsheet with a gazillon tracking numbers on it by 2.

Happy Quatro de Mayo! Andy & I & Eric are going to Las Pinatas for dinner. Good lord: margaritas. 6.30 isn’t going to get here fast enough.

On the other hand I’m really digging the CD I’m playing right now, “Divine Operating System” by Supreme Beings of Leisure. Guilty pleasure that’s not so guilty.

Coffee

Wow, check it out: there’s a new Intelligentsia on Randolph between Michigan and Wabash.

http://intelligentsiacoffee.com/retail/millennium/04-12-2006

I passed it this morning and it looks pretty darn swank. I bet it’ll be crazy busy in the mornings. I just hope this isn’t a sign of impending chain-dom for Intelligentsia. The fact that owners Doug and Emily are, umm, control freaks makes me doubt it though.

We may not know much else about Andy’s birthday party yet, but I DO know what punch I’ll be serving. Mmmmmm.

Saturday.

Had coffee, did some writing, showered/dressed, went to the farmer’s market for scones and blackberry preserves, came home, chatted online, wrote more, chatted, finished the new draft of the novel, looked at porn, chatted, had lunch, chatted, had a nap, looked at more porn and chatted, smoked some 420 to celebrate, listened to music, Andy came home, we had some very quick sex, had leftovers for dinner, smoked up more (I was stoned all night long), watched ‘Diary of a Chambermaid’ by Bunuel, listened to music, watched SNL, jacked off again, went to sleep.
