3 things About Steven Soderbergh’s THE GOOD GERMAN

The Good German [2006]

1. Blanchett’s face, a cracked Kabuki-like mask, “Why did you follow me?”
2. I can see why Tobey McGuire was cast, but he was too lightweight to be convincing. Even his sex scene was unconvincing, which is sad indeed for Tobey.
3. Echoes of Casablanca, The Third Man, Chinatown … yet uniquely its own movie. Only Soderbebrgh can pull off something like that. Pretty much everyone else is like De Palma.
