Scarface [1932]
1. He tosses the gun into the hamper and covers it up with a few towels.
2. Boris Karloff’s only attempt at an American accent?
3. She enters the room dressed all in black.
Seriously, except for swear words and more explicit violence, what has any gangster movie added to the genre since Scarface? No one, not even Scorsese or Coppola, has bested Hawks. And Paul Muni did it all before Pacino, De Niro, et al were even born.

I love your ability to get to the heart of these films your write about by focusing on three points, and you obviously understand and appreciate Hawks. It wasn’t Karloff’s only use of American dialect. He at least tried to sound less British in all the films where he played American characters, and had done it the year before in Hawks’ The Criminal Code.

Thanks! And thanks for reminding me about THE CRIMINAL CODE, which I’ve been wanting see ever since TARGETS. I wish it was easier to find on video. Grr.
