Swift

While I was out of the office yesterday, the axe fell. 15% of my department is gone. I’m still standing. But my job position is changing. Not quite sure how yet. Whew. It’s been the most surreal 2 days in recent memory. Just last night I was hobnobbing with brilliant writers and celebrities, and now here I am back in the trenches.

3 things about Woody Allen’s ANOTHER WOMAN

Another Woman [1988]

1. She begins her monologue. She’s framed in such a way that we don’t see Mia Farrow sitting opposite her. It’s as if she’s talking to us. "Everyone said when I turned 50 I’d be devastated. And they were right."
2. She’s silently reading the Rilke poems. Suddenly it all washes over her: she says nothing, but in the way she tilts her head, hand on her forehead, you see the crushing weight.
3. Last line: "For the first time in a long time, I felt at peace."

Gigantic [2008]

1. "Sorry I’m late, I got lost." "Yeah, the entire city is laid out on a grid system, I can see how that could happen."
2. She walks away still wrapped in the blanket, thinks better of it and then carelessly tosses the blanket onto the bed.
3. Ed Asner on ‘shrooms. Surely some kind of a cinematic first.

The Palm Beach Story [1942]

1. "Nothing is permanent in this world, except for Roosevelt, dear."
2. Rudy Vallee’s nickname: Snoodles.
3. Twins. Two sets of twins. Why hasn’t that been used as a plot device more? Only other occurrence that comes to mind is Big Business.

Walking to work this morning a memory from high school randomly popped into my head. Some friends and I went to a nighttime screening of Candyman. I’m not sure I knew who Philip Glass was at the time, but I remember liking the music more than the movie. Afterwards, because it was the cool thing to do, we all went to a nearby Village Inn for a midnight snack. It was about the only thing open late in suburbia, aside from Denny’s and Blockbuster Video. Anyhow, I made the mistake of ordering a large side of hashbrowns and coffee. And nothing else. And further more, I smothered the hashbrowns in ketchup, after heavily salting them, and I drank the coffee black.  A few minutes later I dashed to the bathroom, and shortly after that I left and went home. Sick. I wasn’t one of the cool kids that night.

Wow, that pot roast was wonderful. And it’ll be wonderful for leftovers tonight. Only one thing left to do: watch Nine to Five with the commentary track.
