3 things about Jonathan Glazer’s BIRTH

Birth [2004]

1. Closeup. Her glassy eyes and open mouth. She stares straight ahead, telling a story with nothing but her face. The shot holds, and holds, and holds, and holds. Suddenly his mouth darts into the frame and he whispers something in her ear. The shot holds, and holds, and holds.
2. The old woman and the boy sit next to each other on the bench in the hallway. Without looking at him she says, simply, “I never liked Sean.”
3. Like Under the Sand, the final scene takes place on a beach.

Check In

Missed two days of work. Back in the office today. Strep throat. Started concentrated antibiotic regimen yesterday. I had an entire night of night sweats and but finally got some sleep.

3 things about Jim Jarmusch’s THE LIMITS OF CONTROL

The Limits of Control [2009]

1. He opens the matchbox and removes a small slip of folded paper. He reads the encrypted message on it, then crumples it up and swallows it. This is repeated several times in the movie. Communion with his way of life?
2. She takes the espresso which is in front of her and trades it for the espresso which is in front of him. “Suspicion,” she says. “Hitchcock.”
3. He casually removes his toupee and places it on the skull atop his desk. Then he notices the stranger sitting in a chair on the other side of the room.

Bionic Boogie
Ray Charles & Milt Jackson: Soul Brothers
Mongo Santamaria: Watermelon Man 12" disco single
Rosemary Clooney: Love (CD)

Capitol Records compilation Sweet and Lovely, Great Ladies of Song, Vol. 1 (CD)
Turin Breaks: Ether Song (CD)
Combustible Edison: Blue Light EP (CD)
Verve Records compilation Exotic Jazz (CD)

We tried out Mana Food Bar for lunch and it was quite good, very chic. Nice cocktails.

3 Things

My Brother’s Wedding [1983]

1. Soldier and his woman are lying naked on top of some plastic-wrapped dry cleaning. Pierce brings them a glass of ice water, but Soldier barely takes a sip.
2.  Inside the car, they start arguing and then a gun comes out. It’s only then that we realize there’s also a baby in the back seat.
3. The funeral attendant stiffly announces that viewing hours are over. He steps out of the room. The mourners walk slowly away.
