3 Things

The Pool [2007]

1. While he talks, he doggedly hacks away at the freshly-picked coconut with a small machete. When it’s been dehulled he scores the middle and breaks it in half, carefully preserving the milk inside. He gives one half to Venkatesh. They drink.
2. "Everywhere outside of India is America!"
3. "I’m reading this book." "But you don’t know how to read." "Yes, but I can look at the pictures."

3 things about Carl Deal & Tia Lessin’s TROUBLE THE WATER

Trouble the Water [2008]

1. Two signs side by side on a fence: one for FEMA assistance and one that reads, “B Cattle Entrance.”
2. Brian is saying goodbye to some National Guardsmen: “I hope you guys don’t get sent back to Iraq. That’s not our war.”
3. The army soldier talking about why he couldn’t open the gates to the base in order to give the refugees shelter: “We had to protect the assets of the government.” The subtle wince as he speaks the words. Members of this unit later received commendations from President Bush for their handling of the situation.

Next Wednesday evening is the preview party for the Chicago International Film Festival. I’ll swing by, have a cocktail, grab the schedule and dash home to post about it. My favorite time of year is here.

Tiki News

I skipped the movie yesterday and, since it was such a lovely afternoon, walked home from work. It took about an hour and ten minutes. And I’m so glad I did: walking north on State I saw that an enormous carved tiki has been installed in front of the soon-to-open Trader Vic’s!

We had dinner at the Gage again last night and, once again, it was excellent. I think it’s my favorite high-end restaurant in Chicago now. Definitely a great place to go when someone else is footing the bill.

Can’t decide if I really want to go see that movie at the Siskel after work or just go home. Grr.

3 things about William Beaudine’s THE OLD FASHIONED WAY

The Old Fashioned Way [1934]

1. “Every cloud has a silver lining, and every plate of vegetable soup has vegetables.”
2. When he hugs his daughter goodbye, he holds the embrace for a moment longer than necessary. A flicker of recognition on both of their faces. You begin to see why W.C. Fields was such a huge star in the 30’s, combining crankiness, irreverence and sentiment in a heady brew.
3. “She’s all dressed up like a well-kept grave.”

Sometimes when the evening is upon us and we don’t know what else to do with ourselves, Andy and I will have what we call a Listening Session. One of us picks a track from a CD we like and plays it, then then the other person picks another track and cues it up, and so on. Alternating DJs basically. It’s always a lot of fun and we end up hearing stuff we don’t usually hear.

We did that Thursday night and I heard a track from the Georgio Moroder CD Andy bought last weekend. Fabulous. I asked him what year it was and he said, "1979." And I said I thought it sounded later than that. Andy said, "That’s because for the next four years everyone was imitating it." I played "Waiting in Vain" from a Bob Marley CD I randomly bought for $1 and it sounded fantastic in surround sound.

Manda Bala [2007]

1. "I watched The Birds the day they cut off my ear."
2. In Brazil, elected officials cannot be tried in civilian courts.
3. A frog has just eaten another frog, head-first. The first frog sits there with two frog legs sticking out of its mouth. Later we watch a group of anonymous friends sitting around a table and eating deep-fried frogs.

Thursday night I started feeling strange. Friday I called in sick to work with a bad cold, missing the company party that I’d looked forward to for so long. Felt better by bedtime. This morning we got up, drove the Zipcar to IKEA in the rain, and just before lunch Andy mentioned he was feeling lightheaded. We got home, unloaded everything in the rain and returned the car. Hot showers. Martini for Andy.

Now, he has a cold. Monday is the last day of his vacation.

We ordered out for pizza and watched Manda Bala, a dazzling and disturbing film. We had to turn away from the screen several times. Andy is resting in bed and reading Ian Fleming. In half an hour SNL is on and I’m so excited. It’s raining again and I can hear the rain drumming on the air conditioner outside.
