3 things about Curtis Bernhardt’s POSSESSED

Possessed [1947]

1. David slumped over the bar. He finishes a drink just as the bartender sets down a fresh drink. He immediately picks up the fresh drink and takes a slug.
2. Joan stands at the counter of the cafe. Her hair is flat. She looks sunburned, dazed. The counterman puts a cup of coffee in front of her but she doesn’t seem to notice. She stares vacantly into the distance. She can’t seem to speak.
3. Carol’s body slides down the length of the staircase, resting at the bottom. Joan stares in horror as the body suddenly dissolves into thin air. Then the real Carol enters through the front door, damp from the rain, wearing a white fur. Joan realizes for the first time that she has just witnessed a hallucination.

Today is my last day at this crummy job. I started here on October 1, 2003. It was a job I got through a temp agency. I certainly stayed here longer than I ever would have imagined. However this job has taught me a lot, and I’ve been able to pay off all my credit cards and save up a pretty sizeable sum. In this day and age that seems to be a lot.

So I can definitely say that I’m leaving this job better than I started, and also that I’ve made some positive contributions to this office in the time that I’ve been here (to the extent that it’s even been possible).

I’m predicting that in the next three months this company will either go through a lot of personnel changes, that a certain business manager will be fired, or will fall apart and be dissolved. Of course, I could be wrong. Incompetence can often hang on for years and years. Witness the current Administration.

Yup. Amtrak to NYC next weekend. If I’m lucky I’ll be able to get a ticket to Satyagraha for the 22nd. In any case, I want to have dinner and drinks at Waikiki Wally’s, possibly on Sunday night. As to the rest, we’ll see.

Raymond Chandler

Here’s my favorite passage from The Long Goodbye:

“I like bars just after they open for the evening. When the air inside is still cool and clean and everything is shiny and the barkeep is giving himself that last look in the mirror to see if his tie is straight and his hair is smooth. I like the neat bottles on the bar back and the lovely shining glasses and the anticipation. I like to watch the man mix the first one of the evening and put it down on a crisp mat and put the little folded napkin beside it. I like to taste it slowly. The first quiet drink of the evening in a quiet bar — that’s wonderful.”

Last night we had our peapod delivery and once again it was the Hot Delivery Guy. HDG has a broad, natural smile and an Eastern European accent. His hair looked slightly damp from the rain and in my head I ran my fingers through it. In real life though all I did was to sign the receipt, give him a nice tip and tell him to drive safely.

Andy always hides out in the kitchen when we get our peapod delivery, straightening the pantry and the fridge. So he’s yet to see the guy. I think he enjoys my descriptions of him though.

I’m thinking about getting away for a few days at the end of next week. Right now NYC is high on my list, but I’m open to other suggestions. Ideas? Travel via Amtrak is is ideal. I just want an interesting place to go for a change of scenery.

3 things about John Frankenheimer’s THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE

 The Manchurian Candidate [1962]

1. On two different occasions, Janet Leigh lights a cigarette and then gives it to Frank Sinatra.
2. The Abe Lincoln lamp in the Shaw house: the base is a bust of Lincoln and the lampshade is a hideous, oversized stovepipe hat.
3. The books piled up on every available surface in Sinatra’s apartment.

Anyone want to see The Manchurian Candidate with me today? It’s at the Music Box at 4:30.
