I know that BEFORE you go on vacation is not the time to start complaining about how much everything costs, but … eek! Stuff in London is expensive! Touristy stuff in particular, most of which I will be avoiding thankyouverymuch. However I do wish to see St. Paul’s ($22 entry, acording to their website). Kew Gardens is also in the $25 range. When I went to London in 1997, I wrote in my diary, “In London, you can either walk or choose a way to spend money.” Walking is free. I will be doing a lot of walking.

On the other and, this is a vacation. And my friend Joe, who is a native, is not a wasteful-spender anyhow. So yeah, I’m sure I’ll be dropping a fair chunk of change while I’m there. But hopefully it will be on things that are really worthwhile. There seems to be an excellent production of Pinter’s The Caretaker right now; that would be worth splurging on. I also should not complain because my friend Sven is putting me up at his flat, which is about a 10-minute walk from Joe’s. This will save me an incredible sum. Sven informed me that he has free unlimited international calling at home, broadband, and will be spending most of the week at his boyfriend’s place.

!!!

Which gods did I have to bribe for all this good fortune? I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I’m also trying not to think about this trip 24/7. The anticipation could drive me crazy.

I kind of feel like going to see The Host at the Century tonight …

I swear I am not making this up.

Last night I dreamed that Andy and I were guests at the Bush White House. I don’t remember the first part of the dream, but after dinner we were in a study of some kind with some of the other guests and W himself. Andy and I were scrunched up together on this love seat so that there’d be enough room for this tiny Asian woman to sit next to us. She never said a word.

I remember that W had a killer bookshelf stereo system. He passed out cups of cofffee to Andy and I while I noticed that he himself was drinking a creamy neon green daiquiri. Then I realized that it was his third drink of the night. I thought to myself, wait, isn’t he on the wagon? In order to make conversation I started talking to W about how mixology is a hobby of mine. He said, “Oh, yeah? I love pina coladas. I’ve even been to South America and had one with real coconut.”

I looked over at the wall and there were several sentences up there in gold lettering, kind of like the lettering they use for the sides of houses. I looked more closely and saw that it consisted of two comments that people had posted to DailyKos about Obama. It struck me as a little odd.

Sigh. I will never get tired of the smell of freshly-brewed coffee.

15G iPod Contest Announcement

And the winner is …

! For one, she actually said, “I like you.” For another, she’s a poor college student and everyone else who entered were white males with relatively-stable incomes. Com’on guys. No pity for you!

I actually met her this morning for brunch (she’s visiting Chicago) and we went to Ann Sather, getting there ahead of the crowds. She was downright ascetic and had oatmeal with a fruit cup. Of course I was the opposite: cinnamon rolls, hash browns, eggs over hard and sausage patties. But then I spent a lot of time walking around afterwards, so umm yeah, I uh walked it all off. That’s my line anyway and I’m sticking to it.

Anyhow we had a delightful time talking about Chicago, Portland, eccentric college students and the like. We traded strategies on how to effectively procrastinate when it’s time to write and also shared our distrust of writing organizations. She’s a delightful person (the phrase “get-along gal” comes to mind but I wouldn’t want her to hit me) and it was great to finally meet up in person. Somehow I just feel a tad less jaded now.

I putzed around today and mostly avoided doing anything useful. I found myself going into daydream mode about the London trip and tried to snap out of it. After all, it’s still over two weeks away; if I let myself get this wound-up so early on then I’m in trouble. Good things come to those who wait. Which reminds me: no CD buying for me until I get there. I want to wait till I’m there and be free to snap up anything interesting.

I am not wearing any green today.

Here’s what Andy and I are up to tonight:

First we’ll have a cocktail. Then we’ll order out from Oodles of Noodles. When the food arrives we’ll put on From Russia With Love. More cocktails. Later on we’ll catch the new SNL that’s on tonight with Julia-Louis Dreyfus. Blissful sleep.

My old iPod dock doesn’t work with my new iPod, dammit.

from Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes:

If you’re not gay and you don’t want to marry someone of the same sex, why do you care? Yet still in the twenty-first century people are trying to put a ban on things that don’t even affect them. Remember those people who wanted to ban gangsta rap? They don’t listen to the music, so why do they care? You never saw Tipper Gore riding in her Escalade sitting on spinning rims, with the seat set way back bumping to some Ice Cube. “Naw Al, I’m not feeling this new Cube.” The same thing goes for the same-sex marriage law. If you’re not a gender sleeping with the same gender, what makes this issue affect you to the point of making signs and marching to ban it? I’d only put that much effort into an issue if there were something in it for me. “What? They want to ban the sale of alcohol after ten o’clock? Where’s my damn sign? I’m gonna go protest right after I sober up.”

I’m so sick of these busybodies like Gary Bauer who are going around the country trying to ban gay marriages. Why do you care? Are you really losing sleep, tossing and turning at night in your bed because Bob and Jim are getting married? Why do you care, unless you were planning on fucking Bob or Jim? “That Jim is hot; now he’s off the market.” Somehow gay couples being married affects their straight marriage. What, are you afraid that gays are going to be more successful in their marriages? Your wife is going to throw it in your face. “Dave and Jake are so happy. They never argue.” And you’re thinking, Yeah, well, if you let me fuck you in the ass a couple of times maybe we’d communicate a little better, too. I’m sure that’ll cheer things up around here.

The lame argument that they use is that marriage is a sacred union that is meant to be between only a man and a woman. By recognizing any other union, like a same-sex couple, it will desecrate the holy institution of marriage. I don’t think the only prerequisite for a legal marriage should be that it has to be between a man and a woman. If you want to make marriage sacred, you need to be even more selective. Like, where the hell were Bauer and the protestors when Liza Minelli married David Guest? Y’all should’ve been out there trying to stop that shit, too.

It seems to me that the conservatives are hung up on the word “marriage.” I say, let them keep marriage. It’s just a word, terminology. Gays just want their union to be legally recognized across the country. What they really want are the same benefits that marriage offers, which in my opinion are none. So gay couples should just come up with a word other than marriage that means the same thing. Hell, come up with something that’s better than marriage. Call it Mardi Gras! “I just got my invitation to Carol and Janet’s Mardi Gras.” Come on, who don’t like a good Mardi Gras? You can’t be mad about that. “Jake and Lester been Mardi Gras’d for thirty years.” Don’t let a word get in the way of your rights. Mardi Gras would be perfect. Gays love a good parade; have your Mardi Gras on a float. Give each other matching Mardi Gras beads. Write your own Mardi Gras vows. It will catch on. “Is this her first Mardi Gras?” “No, this is her second. She has three kids from a previous Mardi Gras.”

A Mardi Gras would be wonderful. You don’t have to subject your best friend to all that damn planning and inconvenience. No one has to worry about what to wear that day. Just come to party. You don’t have to remember some unimportant words you spent the night before trying to memorize. Married couples would look at gays in complete jealousy. It’s like married couples have to live up to the standards of what everyone thinks marriage should be.

Went out for dinner at La Donna last night with

. It was fantastic. I was still full this morning when I woke up. In addition to truly scrumptious pasta (bavette with a creamy bacon sauce) and caramel torte, the martini was actually quite well-crafted as well. Thanks Brandon!

Tonight I shall be a grad school widow. I’m still planning on catching that Resnais film. Before that I might make a stop at the Apple Store and at Borders.

Oh yeah: my post on Chicagoist this morning is all about porn.
