This morning it has finally been confirmed (by means I am not at liberty to relate, at least not at this moment) that not only is my boss incompetent but HIS boss is also incompetent.

Gee, my livejournal has been pretty inactive lately. Wish I could think of something cool to write, something brilliant, insightful, amusing, worthwhile. Okay. I’ll just write whatever comes into my head. Umm. Andy is in the other room, de-stressing from his day. He is doing this by watching Pogo for President. What an awesome lineup of voice talent: Marvin Kaplan, Vincent Price, Jonathan Winters, Stan Freberg. Can’t go wrong. I’m enjoying listening to it in the other room here more than actually watching it. Stan Freberg: I have a thing for him. I think, when he was in his 20’s and early 30’s, he was hot. And funny. Weird. I had an egg salad sandwich for dinner. Also weird.  It was awesome, at this little deli off Michigan Avenue, Eppy’s. Then, upon arriving at home, I had a halfslice of Andy’s pizza. Home Run Inn pizza, sausage. I may yet have a cocktail. I may yet make Andy a cocktail. We’ve got L’Enfant on DVD from greencine and hopefully will watch it within the next few days. I think I’m going to vote early sometime next week; maybe Tuesday. Gee, I wish it were Friday night.

Andy and I had an interesting conversation yesterday over lunch. The gist of it was that, when it comes to social interaction, my use of the internet is at the heart of the majority of my important relationships: either they’re created online or are nourished by online interaction. (Case in point: my family, with whom I have virtually no online interaction, feel more out of touch to me than other, more casual friends of mine; of course , there are lots of other reasons for this, but still …)

This was triggered by a fascinating interview with Jonathan Rosenbaum that I came across online; at one point he says, “–when people ask me today where I live, I am often tempted to say instead of Chicago, I live on the Internet.” I know how he feels. I would almost say, “I live in Chicago, online.” It’s a real place to me. I go through withdrawal when I lose online access. Whereas Andy said that, for him, the online world is more of a portal: a place he visits often but he doesn’t live there.

(There’ll be a post from me on Chicagoist about Jonathan Rosenbaum tomorrow.)

Oh, and last night I had two celebrity dreams:

#1 I am sharing a pizza with Rachel Dratch. We’re hanging out on some sort of a warehouse loading dock; outside I can see that it’s a warm summer day. Incidentally, it’s a pepperoni thin crust.

#2 I’m showing some of my old Super 8mm films to Neil Young. He’s enthusiastic about them way all out of proportion. I’m projecting them on a white sheet. Neil keeps smiling and saying, “Yeah! Yeah! That’s it!”

Bits

Last night I made broiled catfish with lime juice and tarragon. With steamed carrots and peas. Andy liked it. Then we had an evening of “doing our own thing.” Andy fiddled with his laptop, listened to Patti Smith and New Order; I fiddled with my computer, listened to Rotary Connection and read. I tried my hand at a poem. It sucked. Actually, I think I came up with about five good words in there somewhere. Sometimes that’s all you can expect. Earlier in the evening I received a call from MoveOn.org and, much to my own surprise, I agreed to volunteer at their Chicago call center next Thursday for two hours.

Today I would prefer not to be at work. I would prefer wake-and-bake. I bought my grandmother a one-pound box of chocolates for her birthday. It’s Pay Day; but I get direct deposit anyway. I just noticed that Jackie Earle Haley, who played the annoying child actor in The Day of the Locust, is also in the new film Little Children.

47.1% Blagojevich
33.2% Topinka
11.3% Whitney

Yes. Whitney. Green Party Candidate. In the DOUBLE DIGITS. Why? Because G-Rod and Judy both suck.

I’ve been trying to keep up with things. And failing. So, in place of something more interesting, I’ll ask for your opinion …

For dinner tonight: baked catfish or quiche?

‘And yet to myself the sound of my own voice was pleasant, as were the
most imperceptible, the most internal movements of my body. And so I
endeavoured to prolong it. I allowed each of my inflexions to hang
lazily upon its word, I felt each glance from my eyes arrive just at
the spot to which it was directed and stay there beyond the normal
period.  “Now, now, sit still and rest,” said my grandmother. “If you
can’t manage to sleep, read something.” And she handed me a volume of
Madame de Sévigné which I opened, while she buried herself in the
Mémoires de Madame de Beausergent. She never travelled anywhere
without a volume of each. They were her two favourite authors. With no
conscious movement of my head, feeling a keen pleasure in maintaining
a posture after I had adopted it, I lay back holding in my hands the
volume of Madame de Sévigné which I had allowed to close, without
lowering my eyes to it, or indeed letting them see anything but the
blue window-blind.  But the contemplation of this blind appeared to me
an admirable thing, and I should not have troubled to answer anyone
who might have sought to distract me from contemplating it. The blue
colour of this blind seemed to me, not perhaps by its beauty but by
its intense vivacity, to efface so completely all the colours that had
passed before my eyes from the day of my birth up to the moment in
which I had gulped down the last of my drink and it had begun to take
effect, that when compared with this blue they were as drab, as void
as must be retrospectively the darkness in which he has lived to a man
born blind whom a subsequent operation has at length enabled to see
and to distinguish colours. An old ticket-collector came to ask for
our tickets. The silvery gleam that shone from the metal buttons of
his jacket charmed me in spite of my absorption.  I wanted to ask him
to sit down beside us. But he passed on to the next carriage, and I
thought with longing of the life led by railwaymen for whom, since
they spent all their time on the line, hardly a day could pass without
their seeing this old collector. The pleasure that I found in staring
at the blind, and in feeling that my mouth was half-open, began at
length to diminish. I became more mobile; I even moved in my seat; I
opened the book that my grandmother had given me and turned its pages
casually, reading whatever caught my eye.’

Someone describing the sensation of being stoned? Nope. It’s Proust, from Volume II. Absolutely amazing.

On Thursday I finished Volume II and started Volume III.

Hmm. I’m beginning to think that I may wake up tomorrow morning and *cough cough* be too ill to make it into work. What a SHAME it would be to suffer through a three-day weekend …

There Is A 3rd Choice

http://www.whitneyforgov.org

I for one will cast my vote for Whitney. G-Rod and Judy both make me ill, and I agree with Whitney to a surprising degree. Thoughts?
