You Asked For It!

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=314892511386

The purpose of the survey is to gather information to use for Greg Allen’s next big Neo-Futurist production – “You Asked For It!” Greg aims to write and direct “America’s Most Wanted Play” as well as “America’s Least Wanted Play” – all based on and inspired by your answers to the survey (as well as those of hundreds of others).

He will be tabulating all of the responses he receives in the next couple months and analyzing the results. From these statistics he will know exactly what America would most like to see in a play – as well as what they would least like to see in a play. Greg, founder of The Neo-Futurists, will then write and direct those plays based on your exacting specifications. The plays will then be performed back to back in one magnificent evening of theater on our home stage – The Neo-Futurarium – here in Chicago. The show will be called “You Asked for It!” (big surprise) and will run from January 25 through March 3, 2007.

I’ve got to find a way to balance everything in my life. Soon. This week I feel like I’ve been pulled in a million different directions like a strand of human taffy, and there have been times I’ve wanted to scream. Got to find a way. If I didn’t have my stupid day job I could accomplish so much. But one has to earn a living somehow.

Andy and I were standing around in our kitchen Wednesday night after dinner talking about the whole Foley thing, and about the whole political “shift.” I made the point that in America, it’s always sex: you can send thousands of troops off to die for an absurd war, you can collect bribes from a lobbyist, but in the end it’s a good old-fashioned American sex scandal that’s going to bring you down. It’s sickening.

Then I started thinking out loud about ten years from now, and how meaningless all this scurrying will appear when the effects of global warming have accelerated, and the earth is suddenly a very different place. Maybe it’s already a very different place. No one really remembers what it like even a hundred years ago; maybe if Einstein could see it all now he’d be shocked. Perhaps not even he could have imagined something more destructive than the atom bomb.

So I was just thinking out loud and I told Andy that probably by the time mankind gets around to doing something of any real effect on global warming, it will be too late: not too late to save humanity but too late to preserve the world as it is, even today.

Glacier National Park will be a place where a glacier once was instead of a place where there IS a glacier. And maybe parts of Manhattan will already be underwater, and Florida too, or maybe there will be advanced dike systems in place. The kind of dikes that could give way. And the earth will be livable, but even more fragile (for life) than it was before. It’s like one of the astronauts in “For All Mankind” says, about what it was like seeing earth from space (paraphrasing), “You realize that it’s just a tiny blue marble, and there’s darkness all around, a black beyond black.”

All I know is this: if it does take a sex scandal to change things in politics then we’re doomed. “The Drowned World” by J.G. Ballard won’t just be speculative fiction.

The depth of the Republican’s smug self-interest to maintain power is truly mind-boggling. It’s the exact opposite of what I was taught in Sunday School. A lot has changed for me since then, but personal responsibility is still something I believe in. You make your bed, and you lie in it.

Now we find out that at least some members of the GOP have known since 2004 about Foley’s “problem.” Astonishing.

They’re about get ridden out of town on a rail.

Comcast vs. RCN vs. Nothing

Currently Andy & I have EarthLink DSL, SBC for local phone, and Working Assets for long distance. We do not have cable.

Lately EarthLink DSL has sucked. Well, it’s always KIND of sucked but lately it’s REALLY been sucking. Fading in and out in the evenings, and we can’t get any sort of a straight answer from tech support. It’s been enough to start us thinking (again) about what if …

We switch over to a package deal? Right now, if you combine all the above services we currently have, we’re paying around $130/month. Comcast has a package deal for all three at $99 (plus hidden charges) and RCN for $90 (plus hidden charges). Basic cable would be a nice bonus, but the speed/reliability (theorhetically) of cable internet is what’s really tempting.

Is it worth it? Or will we just get screwed no matter what we decide to do? I know you people out there have some advice to share.
