Andy gave me the most wonderful gift for my birthday:

I love this man! (That is, both Trader Vic and my boyfriend).

AT THIRTY-ONE

#1 Last night thousands of tiny insects invaded our home, attracted by the lights we had on. They were so tiny that they easily made their way through the screens on our windows. The only place they hadn’t infested was our back parlour, so we turned off all the lights and slept on our futon. They were mostly gone this morning. They must have left the way they came in.

#2 David is out sick today with some kind of medical emergency. I don’t have any further details. I hope he’s okay.

#3 I got a birthday check from Mom & Dad and a check from Powell’s on the same day. Nice! My mother sent me two DVDs: “The Loved One” and “Rare Jonathan Winters.” Crazy!

#4 For lunch I plan on having leftover Spanish rice and a Cliff bar.

#5 Andy is meeting me after work at the Century. We’ll have a quick dinner at Eatzi’s and then catch the 7:35 of “Heading South.” And then I’ll get presents at home.

#6 Like many other birthdays I’ve had, this one feels strangely anticlimactic so far. I’m not complaining, mind you.

Preface: This Is Unusual, I Did Not Drink In College

Last night I had 3 glasses of sangria, 1 Manhattan, 2 Kamikaze shots, and 3 Gin & Ginger Ales. This morning I woke up and had no hangover. Andy turned to me and shook his head. Then he said, “Your day will come.”

“Freedom is the possibility of isolation. You are free if you can withdraw from people, not having to seek them out for the sake of money, company, love, glory or curiousity, none of which can thrive in silence and solitude. If you can’t live alone, you were born a slave.”

–Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet

It’s one of those mornings where I have the theme song to “Sanford and Son” stuck in my head.

Luckily, my allergies have diminished this morning. Last night I wanted to die.

I did have an odd dream last night where I embraced Louis Armstrong. He was crying and I tried to comfort him. He was only a few feet tall. When I hugged him I suddenly realized he was only a metal statue, kind of like the Tin Man. Later on in the same dream I was onstage with the Staples Singers and we were performing “Keep Your Hand on the Plow.”

Mother Nature Bites

Thanks so much: the moment that the summer heat receeds, making things comfortable, my allergies decide to wake up. Haven’t been sleeping well.
