Tagged!

Once you’ve been tagged, you have to write a blog with six random facts about yourself. In the end you need to choose six people to be tagged and list their names.

1. I had an operation to remove a brain tumor when I was 12; it was about the size of a small orange.

2. The last time I made out with a girl I was 16.

3. In my opinion, carob is one of the most disgusting substances known to man.

4. The last time he ran for governor, I voted for George Ryan.

5. If I had my way, I’d stay up late, get up early, and have a two-hour nap every day.

6. Whenever I hear the songs “Someday” by Sugar Ray or “All I Wanna Do” by Sheryl Crow, I’m filled with warm rose-colored memories of the six months I lived in LA, 1999.

You can never watch too many “Looney Tunes.” Especially when you have a 4-disc box set. They’re like potato chips. You really can’t stop after one.

Uncanny Valley Optimist Club

My friend Steven has been noodling around in his new home studio for awhile now and it’s starting to bear some fruit. It’s a one-man operation, but of course one person can replicate just about anything now. The textures are amazing. Here are a few new tracks from Uncanny Valley Optimist Club.

TIGHT TORCH

This is a hardside instrumental with a great, hooky guitar switch towards the end. The tune ambles along without getting dull and samey.

GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS

He gets vocal about Gene Wilder and Hieronymus Bosch on this track (listen closely). Damn good riff too. Dance remix anyone?

Some Good Advice

Do not do your laundry the morning after you’ve had a terrible fight. Because if you do you will inevitably forget. Forget about your cell phone. Which you have left in the pocket of your shorts. And you will wash your cell phone, and it will be dead, forever and ever, amen.

Silly Question

Let’s say you’re a UPS driver, and when you get to the front door you see a prominent sign which says

ALL DELIVERIES IN REAR
CALL 773-537-3100 FOR FRONT DOOR ADMITTANCE

What would you do?

Of course. You’d leave a “1st Attempt” InfoNotice WITHOUT DOING EITHER.

Fucking stupid driver, I hate you.

Here I am in New Haven, at Yale, at the main library. Sterling Memorial Library. It’s like a church to books. Nice and cool inside too. New Haven is a peculiar place: ultramonied Yale a few blocks away from some of the most concentrated poverty in the US. Lots of construction going on, roadwork. There are restaurants everywhere. A bar that has a sign advertising LATIN NIGHT! $5 MARTINIS!

Jessi looks tired out. Thin, pinched. She’s taking a 2-week vacation to Colorado in a few weeks luckily. But I’m happy to see her. Catching up. She’s spewed a lot of anti-east Coast bitterness as we’ve been talking, which has surprised me. Not that I disagree with her. She seems certain that she will not end up in NYC after graduation. She said, “I’ve seen more bad theater in New York this year than I did the entire time I lived in Chicago.” You have to be rich to live in NYC with any degree of comfort. She says, “Paying $800 a month to share a 3-bedroom apartment with 4 other people, and a bedroom the size of a closet where there’s not even enough room to hang up your clothing … it’s not on my agenda.” She says she’ll consider a job wherever one is offered. She doesn’t graduate until next may but it’s good that she’s already looking. I told her it’d be awesome if something came up for her in Santa Fe. She’d love it there, I have a feeling. She wants to move out west somewhere dry. Get away from the humidity.

By total coincidence, Dave Brubeck is giving a free concert here tomorrow! We’re going. Awesome.

It’s not as hot as previously, but still quite sticky. The trip yesterday was long and boring. I swear, next time I’m just going to take Amtrak. I don’t care what my destination is. Every plane was late. I travelled for 12 hours. Screw that.

So tomorrow I’m flying to Connecticut to visit my friend Jessi at Yale. She’s wrapping up her last year in the master’s directing program, and I’m going to see her staging of Ionesco’s “The Last Tenant” at Yale Summer Cabaret.

I really don’t know what to expect when it comes to Yale. Although I have a hunch that it’s going to look like every other old, sprawling university campus. But with a little more ivy on the walls. I guess that at this point in my life, schools just don’t impress me very much anymore. It’s all about money, power. Andy’s dealings with Dominican (as well as Jessi’s anecdotes about Yale) have firmly convinced me of the truth of what David Byrne once said: “School is an expensive way to meet like-minded people and that’s all you can expect.”

However I’m really really excited to see her direct an Ionesco play. He’s still an untouchable godlike figure to me, and this will be the first time I’ve seen her direct a play that I’m already familiar with.

The trip itself will be a quick in/out basically. Thanks to priceline, I’m saving a bit of money and wasting a lot of time (layovers, etc.) Oh well. I’ll have my iPod and several books.

Tonight when Andy gets off work we’re going to see “A Scanner Darkly” at Piper’s Alley and then have dinner at Las Pinatas. Bliss
