3 Things

The Mother and the Whore [1973]

1. “If I try, I can say the maximum of nonsense in the minimum of time.”
2. The bottle of “smooth” liquor that Alexandre and his friend pass around is Jack Daniel’s.
3. The walls and floors of the apartment. Scuff marks, gray stripes of grime on the lower half of the door. A door that’s obviously been battered both by furniture being moved in and out repeatedly and also by people’s shoes, kicking it. Brown flooring that looks like dirty felt. It’s anyone’s guess what it would all look like in color.

Heaven help me, but tonight I’m going to go see The Mother and the Whore. It’s a masterpiece, and I haven’t seen it. And it’s 215 minutes long.

3 things about Sofia Coppola’s MARIE ANTOINETTE

Marie Antoinette [2006]

1. During the shoe montage, there is a split-second shot where you can see, in the background, a pair of baby blue Chuck Taylors.
2. When Marie takes a bath she has to wear a sort of long bathing shirt.
3. In this film Danny Huston plays Emperor Joseph, who was played in Amadeus by Jeffrey Jones. Hmm.

What a delightful movie! Any mixed reviews that this film garnered were totally unjustified. S. Coppola is every bit as much in control as she was in her first film. This is a movie that will age very well. In ten years, people will be talking about it differently. The costumes and cinematography were luscious.

WEekend

We spent the first two days of our long weekend cleaning the apartment. We emptied the vacuum cleaner five times. We’re now living in a shiny, glossy, sterile(-seeming) apartment. We’ve watched a variety of films this weekend, and tonight we’re going to watch Marie Antoinette. We’ve had several cocktails this weekend. We’ve had pizza two nights in a row and tonight we’ll be having it again. We’ve sort of spent today doing our own thing, which has involved a lot of time with our respective laptops. We both have to go back to work tomorrow.

3 things about Ridley Scott’s BLADE RUNNER

Blade Runner [1982]

1. The darkness, the shadows, the water dripping from the ceilings and down thewalls in the Bradbury building. Clearly BioShock was aiming for this ambience. And how, you may ask, does Rob know anything about BioShock? Zach showed it to me when I visited NYC. Yup … it has Blade Runner written all over it. And is all the better for it.
2. Ford takes a half-sip of vodka, and blood from his mouth clouds the remaining liquid in the glass. But why is he drinking vodka in this scene when in the rest of the film he clearly prefers bourbon? My conclusion: Ridley Scott thought this shot would look really cool, so he had him drink a clear liquid instead.
3. The interviewer in the early scene, compulsively puffing on his cigarette. Fan blades, smoky light. A steaming mug (of coffee?) at his elbow.

Only the second time I’ve seen it. I can certainly appreciate the movie, and visually it is pretty spectacular. But it doesn’t excite me in the way that something like Brazil does. It was fun to watch.

3 things about Akira Kurosawa’s THE IDIOT

The Idiot [1951]

1. He sits slumped in the chair, the bottle of liquor on one thigh and a glass on the other.
2. Side view. She sits next to him on the piano bench. Behind them is a window, and outside the window is a blizzard. As she talks to him she occasionally picks out a few notes on the piano.
3. Some of the worst ending lines of dialog I’ve ever heard, “If only we could love like he did, not out of hate. I am the idiot.”

Some striking scenes and images but Kurosawa misses on this one. Everything is just too much: too long, too much melodrama, too much like a soap opera, too talky. What an endurance test this was to watch.

Uh oh. I’ve come to the conclusion that my new workplace is one of those buildings that is feezing year round. Especially in the summer, due to hyperactive air conditioing. I swear, if I had a little space heater in my cubicle right now I would have it turned on. My friend Dan, who’s also a coworker, told me today that he keeps a ragged sweater in his office to wear while he’s working. Yes, it’s going to be Rob As Mr. Rogers: I’ll come in each morning, sing a little welcome song and put on a sweater.

Take it from Neil Young:

The world on a string
doesn’t mean a thing
it’s only real in the way
that I feel from day to day
