3 Things

The Time of the Wolf [2003]

1. In the middle of deepest night. A completely dark screen. Except. Far, far in the distance the merest speck of flickering orange from a fire.
2. An old woman drinks goat’s milk from a large clear plastic container.
3. The young man shows the girl how to rewind the cassette tape using her index finger.

Hobby

Andy inspired me, and last night I started going through all my old VHS tapes. Specifically the stuff that I taped off TV. For the most part I don’t really care about the movies that are on there. No. I’m only looking for the commercials.

One commercial break at a time, I’m transferring them to DVD. So far most of the commercials I’ve been preserving are circa December 22, 1989 (with a few random ones from 1997). There’s some pure gold in there. Hot Pockets, cheesy toys, Teddy Grahams, Sheer Energy L’eggs. She knows how to use them. Diet Pepsi. A disturbing Wrigley ad.

So far I have two hours of ’em and I plan to keep going. If I get real ambitious I’ll post some here.

Funny how nostalgia extends especially to those things that once annoyed us the most.

3 things about Paul Auster’s THE INNER LIFE OF MARTIN FROST

The Inner Life of Martin Frost [2007]

1. Irene Jacob tastes the aspargus and makes a series of “yummy” sounds.
2. Sophie Auster definitely has her dad’s eyes.
3. The allusion to Cocteau’s Orpheus at the end: he is not allowed to look at her directly, but they can look at each other in the rear view mirror of the car.

3 Things

Battle for Haditha [2007]

1. Ramirez asks his CO if he can see a doctor. He’s been having trouble sleeping because of nigtmares. The CO says he’ll have to wait until his tour is over and he’s on leave.
2. He shoots the passengers of the car one by one, and as they are shot they gracefully fall to the ground.
3. The man receives $50 for planting the IED, and another $50 when he proves that he detonated it.

3 things about Dennis Hopper’s EASY RIDER

Easy Rider [1969]

1. Peter Fonda explaining the meaning of the word dude to Jack Nicholson: “Dude means nice guy. Dude means a regular sort of person.”
2. The slow dolly backwards from the torn plaid sleeping bag.
3. The very slow pan which takes in the entire circle of hippies. Then they pray.
